We all knew it coming and now it’s official: Jeremy Corbyn has confirmed that he is launching a ‘new kind of political party’ with Zarah Sultana, who quit as a Labour MP earlier this month.
Unusually, this new party doesn’t have a name yet, but Corbyn assures that will come in good time, as he’s still busying himself with messages from the public which he claims are coming in at a rate of ‘500 a minute’.
He does have a website with a sign-up form, though, titled ‘Your Party‘, which also features a link for donations and a statement shared by the two founders.
It reads: ‘The system is rigged when 4.5 million children live in poverty in the sixth richest country in the world.
‘The system is rigged when giant corporations make a fortune from rising bills. The system is rigged when this government says there is no money for the poor, but billions for war.
‘We cannot accept these injustices – and neither should you.’
Corbyn, 76, says he wants the name for the party to be ‘inclusive, effective to mobilise people and bring people in’, encouraging people to send in ideas.
There will be an ‘inaugural conference’ at the end of the ‘founding process’, probably around September which is when the traditional party conference season kicks off in the UK.
So what does this mean for the Tories and Labour, who are both an utter shambles at the moment, and for Reform UK which has been picking up steam? This new party could end up splitting the vote for Labour in the same way that Reform will split the vote for the Tories, which blows the race at the next General Election wide open.
Don’t forget – the voting age in the UK will drop t0 16 by the time the next election rolls around in 2029. Surely this is good news for Corbyn and Zultana’s new party?
Interesting times ahead…
