There’s that old story about how Al Qaeda prisoners in Guantanamo Bay were forced to listen to Metallica on repeat as a form of torture and now it seems like this has been brought to its inevitable conclusion, as it emerged that two prison officers at Oklahoma County Jail have been charged with cruelty after forcing inmates to listen to ‘Baby Shark’ on repeat for hours.

There’s no denying that ‘Baby Shark’ is one of the most annoying songs of all time, so Gregory Cornell Butler Jr., Christian Charles Miles and Christopher Raymond Hendershott must have been real pieces of work to make prisoners listen to it in an attorney visitation room of the jail for two hours in a row during November and December of last year. An investigation has described the treatment as ‘inhumane’ and a judge has now charged Butler and Miles with misdemeanour cruelty of a prisoner and Hendershoot has been charged with learning about the mistreatment and doing nothing to stop it.

An investigator said the following about the case:

Miles confirmed he and Butler systematically worked together and used the… attorney booth as a means to discipline inmates and teach them a lesson because they felt that disciplinary action within the Detention Center was not working in correcting the behaviour of the inmates.

The playing of the song was said to be a joke between Miles and Butler.

The music put undue emotional stress on the inmates who were most likely already suffering from physical stressors.

Wow. Not really sure if this is the epitome of American compensation/ambulance chasing culture or if listening to that song over and over again really would cause such terrible problems for anyone subjected to it. It is really annoying, but I’m not sure if two hours would tip you over the edge – maybe eight or something, but I think you could probably handle two hours. I’ll admit that I don’t want to try it out myself though.

I guess we’ll end up seeing how the case pans out, but for now I think it’s probably just another get rich quick scheme on the side of the prisoners. Will probably work out for them though won’t it?
