Bad news for anyone who was waiting on the Jon Snow spinoff series for their Game of Thrones fix – Kit Harrington has revealed that the show has been cancelled.

Which is a shame, as we were hoping for a bit of redemption for the franchise and the writers to clean up the mess from the last couple seasons of Game of Thrones. You would also think it was a no-brainer given the other Games of Thrones spinoff, House of the Dragon, has been so well-received, and is back for a second season this June.

On the reason the Jon Snow spinoff got cancelled, Kit Harrington told Screen Rant:

“In development, you look at every angle, and you see whether it’s worth it. And currently, it’s not. Currently, it’s off the table, because we all couldn’t find the right story to tell that we were all excited about enough. So, we decided to lay down tools with it for the time being. There may be a time in the future where we return to it, but at the moment, no. It’s firmly on the shelf.”

That’s too bad, because Jon Snow really was the obvious choice for a Game of Thrones spinoff, but it sounds like they can’t come up with any ideas. How about Jon Snow and Tormund running wild around Westeros? Maybe a Stark sister dropping in now and again? And of course we’d all like to see how much Westeros is thriving under the rule of its new king – Brandon Stark. But then it’s one thing to come up with a general idea and quite another to create a compelling series that people actually want to watch.

It’s not all bad news, though. It’s possible they’ll revisit the Jon Snow spinoff if Season 2 of House of the Dragon is any good. There’s also another Game of Thrones spinoff set to go in production this year, called ‘A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight.’ The major roles of Ser Duncan the Tall (AKA Dunk) and young King Aegon V Targaryen (AKA Egg) will be played by Dexter Sol Ansell and Peter Claffey.

So while Jon Snow’s watch ended before it even began on this occasion, there’s plenty more Game of Thrones universe on the way.
