If you wear underwear in bed you could potentially be opening yourself up to a world of pain in the form of skin infections and perhaps even worse if you’re a bloke.

Gynaecologist Dr Alyssa Dweck explains that sleeping in tight underwear creates a breeding ground for infection:

I often tell my patients to sleep without underwear.

…[if the area] is constantly covered — especially by a fabric that’s not moisture-wicking or absorbent — moisture collects, creating the perfect breeding ground for bacteria or yeast.

The way to avoid this, if you’re a lady particularly, is to sleep naked – which is the one your boyfriend will probably be advocating. Alternatively you can head to the other end of the spectrum and wear extremely baggy pants.

Men don’t have it so easy, unfortunately, and risk a lot more than a simple skin infection when they wear their CKs between the sheets. Dr Brian Steixner recommends sleeping naked for men, unless you want to risk your future chances of having kids:

Your nether regions need to be just the right temperature in order to optimise sperm production.

So there you go boys, wear underwear to sleep and you could end up overcooking your meat and two veg. Oh and don’t worry, Dr Steixner says you can still get infections too:

More bacteria makes for a higher likelihood that any chafed or irritated skin down there becomes infected.

It could be worse though, there are plenty of other infections you could have down there that you really don’t want. Just ask the girl that used Snapchat to tell all of her sexual partners they were probably infected.
