Another day, another British girl facing jail time for smuggling copious amounts of drugs into countries that have zero tolerance on drugs.

This time it’s the turn of Charlotte May Lee, from south London, who was busted in Sri Lanka for allegedly carrying two suitcases full of a drug known as ‘kush’: a synthetic mixture of cannabis, fentanyl, tramadol and formaldehyde. Kush is highly addictive and responsible for a lot of psychiatric conditions in the region.

The 21-year-old ex-TUI air stewardess had travelled to Thailand around two weeks ago and was vague about her plans ahead of the trip. According to her friends, she mentioned that “she had a job on a boat” but never shared any other details.

The amount she was carrying – 42kg – is apparently worth £1.2 million. Which is hard to believe, but that’s what MailOnline, LadBible et al are reporting.

A friend of Charlotte’s told Mail Online: “No one has heard from her in a few days. Her Snapchat did go live at one point, but whether it was her or the police we don’t know. She was back here [in the UK] in May and then she was off again. But she did not mention she was going away, nothing was said. And previously she would have said [about her plans].”

A family friend said that she had been “abandoned and is rotting in a jail cell”. They told The Sun: “We’re frantically worried. She was arrested then seemingly abandoned and is rotting in a jail cell. She’s very scared.”

Another friend added: “She’s been told if convicted, because of the size of the drugs haul, she’s looking at between 20 and 25 years in jail. British Embassy staff warned her she’s going nowhere soon.”

Not good. As we’ve already seen this month, if you’re a young British lady who insists on smuggling drugs to make some money, make sure you don’t smuggle said drugs into any country other than England. Only in good old Blighty will you be let off with a slap on the wrist. In Georgia or Dubai or Sri Lanka, as Charlotte is finding out, they take that sort of thing a lot more seriously.

We’ve yet to hear what Charlotte has to say about the whole thing but my guess is she was ‘pressured’ into it or she ‘didn’t have a clue’ what was in the suitcases to begin with. She may even be pregnant like all these other female drug runners being busted recently, who knows? We’ll have to see what the authorities in Sri Lanka make of her excuses.

Either way, not a great spot for a young girl to be in, so let’s see what, if anything, the British government can do to help. Good luck, Charlotte…
