The man arrested on suspicion of arson after two properties and a car linked to Keir Starmer were set alight in north London has been identified as Ukrainian national Roman Lavrynovych.

21-year-old Lavrynovych is set to appear today (Friday) at Westminster Magistrates’ Court.

In the early hours of Monday, emergency services responded to a fire at the Kentish Town home where Sir Keir Starmer lived before becoming Prime Minister and moving into 10 Downing Street.

On the same street, a car linked to Keir Starmer had previously been set alight in the early hours of Thursday, May 8.

In the early hours of Sunday between the two aforementioned incidents, firefighters dealt with a fire at the front door of a house converted into flats in nearby Islington, which is also owned by Keir Starmer.

And so it was pretty obvious what the pattern was, and earlier this week Lavrynovych was arrested at an address in Sydenham, south-east London. Fortunately he was at home and not out starting another fire.

Bethan David, head of the Crown Prosecution Service counter terrorism division, said:

‘Following a review of the evidence provided by the Metropolitan Police Service’s counter terrorism command, we have authorised criminal charges against a 21-year-old man after three fires in north London.

‘Roman Lavrynovych has been charged with three counts of arson with intent to endanger life or being reckless as to whether life would be endangered, contrary to section 1(2) and (3) of the Criminal Damage Act 1971.

‘These charges relate to two fires at residential addresses in Islington on Sunday, May, 11 2025, and in Kentish Town on Monday May 12, 2025, as well as a car fire in Kentish Town on Thursday, May 8, 2025.

‘The Crown Prosecution Service reminds all concerned that criminal proceedings against this defendant are now active and that he has the right to a fair trial.’

All this time we thought the motivation behind the fires was perhaps something to do with farmers, Gaza, energy prices or maybe Sir Keir’s new stance on immigration. Who knew it might’ve been Ukraine-related? I guess we’ll find out for sure if Roman Lavrynovych is forthcoming with his motivations during his trial today.

We did wonder whether it was a bit suspicious that some random Ukrainian guy could track down multiple homes and a car linked to Starmer, but turns out you can easily Google these things and narrow the locations down significantly. You can even have it all confirmed for £3 on the Land Registry website. Although you’d think anyone doing that for a Prime Minister would have raised major red flags.
