A diversity officer who told colleagues she was of Latin, South Asian and Arab descent has been brutally outed by her mum who revealed her daughter is actually ‘white as snow’.

Raquel Saraswati, 39, a Chief Inclusion Officer at Philadelphia-based Quaker group American Friends Service Committee (AFSC), is now accused of ‘cultural vulturism’ and ‘faking’ her heritage, a huge mortal sin these days.

Raquel Evita Saraswati, a Muslim activist who for years has encouraged people to believe that she is a woman of color, including Latina as well as of South Asian and Arab descent, is the AFSC?s chief equity, inclusion, and culture officer, a senior position that gives her access to the files of dozens of the organization?s staff and volunteers. But Saraswati, who was born Rachel Elizabeth Seidel, is not a person of color, according to her mother, Carol Perone. ?I call her Rachel,? Perone told The Intercept, when reached by telephone. ?I don?t know why she?s doing what she?s doing.? Saraswati, her mother added, is of British, German, and Italian descent ? not Latina, South Asian, or Arab. ?I?m as white as the driven snow and so is she,? added Perone, who also shared with The Intercept photos of Saraswati as a child. In the photos, which the mother asked not be published, Saraswati?s complexion is significantly lighter than the bronzed look in more recent photographs. Perone also shared with The Intercept her Ancestry.com profile and a photo of Saraswati?s biological father, who is deceased. Another relative who asked not to be identified confirmed that Saraswati is white. Perone noted that her daughter converted to Islam in high school and that at some point she seemed to have felt the need to portray herself as having a different ethnic identity.

Raquel’s mum really put the boot in when speaking to The Intercept, revealing her daughter is really of English, German and Italian descent, and adding:

‘I call her Rachel. I don’t know why she’s doing what she’s doing.

I’m as white as the driven snow and so is she. I’m German and British, and her father was Calabrese Italian. She’s chosen to live a lie, and I find that very, very sad.’

Gee, thanks mum. Naturally, members of the AFSC are very unhappy with Raquel/Rachel’s fibbing and are investigating ‘why a member of its most senior leadership has so profoundly eroded trust among people of color’.

Oskar Pierre Castro, who helped hire Saraswati in June 2021, says he feels conned as he recruited her partly based on her ethnicity:

‘Great, a person of color, a queer person of color, who happens to be a Muslim, it’s a woman, all these things, and someone who seemed to get it.

Imagine the trauma of people who confided in her, trusted her, and shared sensitive information about their work and about their lives, thinking that she’s a fellow person of color.’

He also noted ‘the shades of bronzer she applies to her face had become darker over time’, which is pretty funny. Fair play to Raquel/Rachel – she did make a pretty convincing Muslim of Latin, South Asian and Arab descent while it lasted. She changed her name, whacked on some bronzer, put on a head wrap and the rest was easy. Just a shame her mum had to butt in and ruin it all.

Has she tried AncestryDNA?
