British comedian Andrew Lawrence has had a gig cancelled after cracking a “horrific” joke about the Liverpool parade crash, which injured dozens of people on Monday.

What was this unforgivably offensive, potentially career-ending joke? It was Tweeted out by Andrew Lawrence yesterday afternoon:

Yikes. Kind of asking for trouble with that one, and he definitely got it with the backlash that ensued. A whole load of people immediately started having a go at him in the comments, arranging to have Lawrence ‘cancelled’ by contacting venues which have booked him, and even tagging Merseyside police:

Which then resulted in Andrew Lawrence Tweeting confirmation that at least one of his future gigs has been cancelled:

Now obviously it’s not a smart thing to Tweet jokes about what happened in Liverpool, and especially so soon after the event, but is it really worth ruining a man’s career and livelihood over? I mean, yeah it’s offensive, but it’s not that bad, is it? The reason anyone would find it funny is because they know they’re not supposed to find it funny. But essentially, it’s just a generic ‘X town is a sh1thole’ joke.

On the other hand, children were run over and trapped under that car, and there’s nothing funny about that. So in that sense, the condemnation is totally justfieid.

Either way, being a bit of an edgelord and then complaining that you can’t say anything these days is what Andrew Lawrence has built a ‘career’ on, so maybe this is all part of his master plan in the long run. I’m sure a lot of people will be hearing about him for the first time purely because of the backlash he’s receiving for his Tweet. That’s the irony of cancel culture, I guess.
