This is the new advert for Euro 2012 from Now TV, the channel showing the competition in China. Really. It’s real. Why are there masked gunmen storming the stadium under the black clouds of a nuclear winter? Why has Europe been ravaged by an atomic apocalypse? Most importantly, why is Euro 2012 still going ahead in this devastatingly bleak vision of the imminent future? Fvck that right?! Who’s watching? Are the 57 English survivors holed up deep underground in a lead-lined bunker, the red cross of St George daubed clumsily across their bare chests with the blood of their countrymen as they enjoy the match?
Play would presumably be pretty sporadic, given all the shooting and shelling and unending waves of bomber aircraft losing their deadly ordnance over the stadium, but the show must go on apparently. It’s an optimistic vision.
What I love most about this is that some tv exec must have pitched this to the guys who commission this sort of thing at Now TV. Instead of having him sectioned, they smiled and nodded and said things like, ‘Yeah and then these sweet robots controlled by the soldiers can wade in and start firing missiles from their shoulders!! Great work, here’s 10,000,000 Yuan, let’s get smashed’. Probably.
I’d really like to know what that bloke is singing about – anyone speak enough Chinese to give us an insight into WHAT THE FUCK IS GOING ON? Get in touch.
