‘Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace’ is the absolute crème de la crème of British parody television.

The show within a show pretends to be part horror TV series, part soap opera. Created by Richard Ayoade and Matthew Holness, it follows Garth Marenghi (Holness) – a fictional horror author who made a TV show with his manager Dean. He looks back at the series with commentary from the “original” cast, which includes Ayoade as well as Alice Lowe and the one and only Matt Berry.

It does such a perfect job of parodying the fashion, special (shitty) effects, production gaffes and music of low-budget 80s television that you could describe it as perfectly crap. The tiniest details such as the dodgy camera work and sound editing make it the ultimate spoof drama show. As a result, although it only aired for one series of six episodes, this show has remained on the top shelf of comedy lover’s DVD cupboards since first hitting our screens back in 2004.
