The gender wage gap is a controversial topic and even in the supposedly equal times we live in now, it still affects many women worldwide. Australia is one of those places, where the difference in wages between men and women doing the exact same job has hovered between 15-19% for the past 20 years.

Alexandra O’Brien, owner of the Handsome Her cafe in Brunswick, Australia has decided to take matters into her own hands by introducing a 18% tax for male customers. And this isn’t just some quick money making scheme, as the proceeds from this tax are actually going to a charity that benefits aboriginal women.

All seems fair enough right? Well, I’m probably being optimistic. The internet had a lot to say about it and I’m fairly sure that you guys are going to as well:
I think if you want to fight for equality then surely treating everyone the same is the way to go

This sums my thoughts up perfectly. I get the idea behind it, but I can't help but feel that it creates a bigger divide.

Not a fan. Whilst appreciate highlighting the issue of pay, creating an us and them is divisive. Flip this, and Twitter is in flames.

That last comment – unbelievable.
I guess people raise a good point that this almost creates a divide between men and women, but of course the aim was to create a balance, as women still get paid considerably less than men for working the exact same job. I guess we’ve still got a long way to go with regards to equality for women and this café’s idea only seems to highlight that. Hats off to them for trying though, especially since the money’s going to charity.
