We’ve shared countless stories over the years on the perils of getting cut-price cosmetic surgery in Turkey, but I think this is the first time we’ve ever blogged about a man dying via a botched hair transplant out there.
The 38-year-old British man had travelled to Istanbul to have the procedure done at a private clinic called CINIK in Besiktas, according to Turkish outlet OdaTV.
Shortly after the 5-hour operation, he fell ill, was transported to an intensive care unit at a nearby hospital, and died.
The man’s body has now been taken to the Forensic Medicine Institute for an autopsy before being sent back to the UK. An investigation has been launched into the death, with officials looking into accusations of ‘reckless homicide.’
An FCDO spokesperson told Metro: ‘We are supporting the family of a British man who died in Turkey and are in contact with the local authorities.’
It’s really anyone’s guess what went wrong here. Maybe the man had an allergic reaction to the meds, or maybe the wounds in his head got infected somehow. Maybe the doctors oversedated him or cocked up the procedure somehow.
I suppose that’s what the investigation will determine, but I wouldn’t hold out hope for justice given how things tend to operate out there.
Just goes to show how important it is to work with reputable clinics and not seek budget options when it comes to this sort of thing. Of course these things are incredibly rare no matter where you get them done, but you can further limit the likelihood of a disaster if you pay for a clinic/surgeon who you know will take care of you.
Just stump up the £5,000 or whatever it is and rest assured knowing that you’re not going to die on an operating table in Turkey. Surely it’s worth the peace of mind (if you can afford it), no?
Apologies to anyone who’s reading this who may be about to get a hair transplant of their own (especially out in Turkey), but it’s important to be aware of these things. Good luck, hope it goes well!
