You’d think that with all the Brits getting busted for international drug smuggling recently, anyone with half a braincell would be put off from attempting something similar. Not so, for this one British couple who were busted trying to smuggle £1,000,000 worth of cannabis into the UK recently.
Daniel McDonald, 36, and Sian Warren, 34, were detained after landing at Heathrow Airport on May 27, returning from a holiday in Bangkok.
How many suitcases do you need to smuggle £1,000,000 worth of weed into the UK? Well, according to Metro, four of their suitcases were packed with 51kg of cannabis. Not quite sure the math is quite correct there if we’re really claiming a million quid’s worth of cannabis, but it’s still a hell of a lot.
The pair, from Salford in Greater Manchester, were charged with importing class B drugs and appeared at Uxbridge Magistrates Court last week.
Sian’s dad Tony told The Sun that his daughter ‘has not brought anything back, definitely not’, adding: ‘She had her own suitcases with clothes in it.’
Which I guess is what you’d expect any dad worth their salt to say.
Daniel and Sian were bailed and will next appear at Isleworth Crown Court on June 26. It will certainly be interesting to see what sort of sentence they end up with, given the unbelievably lenient ‘punishment’ dished out to other Brits who have recently tried to smuggle marijuana into the country.
Just weeks ago, two best friends from Birmingham got let off with a slap on the wrist after attempting to smuggle 35kg of cannabis into the UK from New York. Shortly after, a 19-year-old Londoner was also let off scot-free for her attempt at bringing £225,000 worth of weed into the UK from Canada.
And so, maybe the risk v reward isn’t so bad after all. Just as long as people like Daniel and Sian are bringing the drugs into the UK and not into a country with a zero-tolerance policy on this sort of thing.
Too many Brits have found that out recently, including Bella May Culley – currently facing 20 years in Georgia for carrying 14kg of cannabis into the country from Thailand.
