Absolute nightmare for the BBC and Glastonbury at the weekend as they were so concerned with Irish rap trio Kneecap making pro-Palestine political statements during their set, that they didn’t realise British punk duo Bob Vylan were about to do the same thing.
While the BBC ensured Kneecap’s set didn’t make it to air, Bob Vylan (made up of frontman Bobby Vylan and drummer Bobbie Vylan) led festival-goers in chants of ‘free, free Palestine’ and ‘Death to the IDF’.
Here’s how it played out live on TV:

The BBC, Glastonbury and even Keir Starmer have all condemned Bob Vylan’s performance, with the Prime Minister stating: “There is no excuse for this kind of appalling hate speech.”
Avon and Somerset police also confirmed that they are ‘reviewing footage’ to determine whether any offences have been committed that would require a criminal investigation.
Meanwhile, Bob Vylan put out the following statement on Instagram, fully doubling-down and standing by what they said:
‘As I lay in bed this morning, my phone buzzing non-stop, inundated with messages of both support and hatred, I listen to my daughter typing out loud as she fills out a school survey asking her for feedback on the current state of her school dinners
‘She expressed that she would like healthier meals, more options and dishes inspired by other parts of the world.
‘Listening to her voice her opinions on a matter that she cares about and affects her daily reminds me that we may not be doomed after all. Teaching our children to speak up for the change they want and need is the only way that we make this world a better place.
‘As we grow older and our fire possibly starts to dim under the suffocation of adult life and all its responsibilities, it is incredibly important that we encourage and inspire future generations to pick up the torch that was passed to us. Let us display to them loudly and visibly the right thing to do when we want and need change. Let them see us marching in the streets, campaigning on ground level, organising online and shouting about it on any and every stage that we are offered. Today it is a change in school dinners, tomorrow it is a change in foreign policy.’
Will be interesting to see how this plays out, but between the condemnation for Kneecap and Bob Vylan and the news that Palestine Action are set to be listed as a terrorist organisation, it seems like the establishment are panicking massively about the sentiment around the situation in Gaza at the moment.
It does seem a bit odd to brand Palestine Action and a couple musicians as terrorists for opposing the annihilation of Gaza, while the British government continues to arm the IDF and enables the destruction that’s continuing out there every single day, but then what do we know?
Obviously it’s not right to then support antisemitism, but I’m not sure that calling for death to the IDF (a national military) and for a Free Palestine necessarily falls under the antisemitic umbrella. People are just sick and tired of seeing innocent women and children being blown up on social media all day every day. Is that really a crime?
