You would think an ‘independent journalist’ like Tommy Robinson would get his facts straight before sharing a photo of a mixed-race family and trying to suggest there was something dodgy going on, but instead, he’s ending up putting an innocent man and his family right in it.
A harmless day at the park saw Yorkshire musician Olajuwon Ayeni playing with his white granddaughters at a local playground in Redcar, but for Tommy, this was blatantly a black man preying on two little white girls:
He captioned the image: ‘Wtf is even going on here? Where are the parents?!’. Um… probably at home safe in the knowledge that their girls are being looked after by their granddad at the park.
Tommy deleted the Tweet as soon as he realised he had got it wrong, but by then, a sizable chunk of his 1.4 million followers had seen it, and the family have since been subjected to death threats, trolls, and even people in the street accusing Ayeni of being a paedophile. He was even dropped from record management amid the fallout as no one knew what was going on.
The young granddad told The Guardian: ‘I feel I have to sleep with one eye open. I feel unsafe, scared and sad, as mine and my brother’s lives have been threatened. Someone said they will seek revenge and I’ll never walk again, all for just being in the park with the kids I love on a family day out.
‘It’s been twisted by haters and wicked people.’
His wife Natalie added: ‘We haven’t gone outside at home, we just can’t.
‘Just after it started to go viral, someone in the local pub recognised Olajuwon immediately; we couldn’t believe how quick it had spread. We were walking home from shops just streets from our house, and two lads passed us, spun round and said ‘I hope you’re not them off that video or we’re coming back to slash you up’. It’s just horrendous.
‘Someone was shouting ‘paedophile’ outside the house the other night, so I rang the police again but they say there’s little they can do. It feels a matter of time before something bad happens. We tried to go out yesterday and had to come home.’
Absolutely terrible. Surely not even Tommy’s supporters can defend an astronomical c0ck-up like this one. No apology or anything, just deleted the Tweet and moved on with his life, whereas this innocent man and his family are dealing with the consequence. I’m starting to think Tommy might be a little bit racist? What do you think?
Could be yet another lawsuit on the way for Robinson, who already has more than enough on his plate in that regard. Although he’ll be hoping the CCTV footage from St. Pancras station will at least absolve him of knocking out a 64-year-old man the other week.
