BBC News presenter Martine Croxall is being celebrated (and also condemned) after making an on-air correction during a live news broadcast the other night, changing the term “pregnant people” to “women”.

While presenting a segment on the UK heatwave and the health risks it poses, Croxall said:

“London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine has released research which says that nearly 600 heat-related deaths are expected in the UK.

“Malcom Mistry, who was involved in the research, says that the aged, pregnant people… women… and those with pre-existing health conditions need to take precautions.”

Will be interesting to see if there’s any consequences for Martine Croxall from the BBC’s end, given she technically went “off-script”, even if she was just stating accurate information.

Naturally, JK Rowling is absolutely loving it:

Interestingly, Croxall has already taken the BBC to one employment tribunal for sex and age discrimination earlier this year, so I’m sure she won’t hesitate to do something similar if they decide to punish her over this.

Croxall was also suspended by the BBC back in 2022 when Boris Johnson resigned for saying on-air that the news “filled her with joy”, so it seems she has form for this sort of thing.

Even still, I couldn’t imagine something like this playing out on BBC News even just a year ago. Does it signify that the pendulum is well and truly swinging the other way when it comes to “woke” language? We’ll have to see if other BBC presenters follow suit.
