I don’t think it’s too controversial to say that the skill gap between men and women’s football is quite substantial, but even still, you wouldn’t expect an under-15 boys team to thrash a women’s national team 7-1, would you?
Sure enough, a Switzerland side featuring Alisha Lehmann lost 7-1 to FC Luzern’s Under-15 team this wek, just days before the country plays host to the 2025 Women’s Euros, set to kick off on July 2.
According to Swiss outlet Blick, the game was broadcast live on TikTok to 70,000 viewers, but was promptly deleted after the ladies suffered a 7-1 beatdown.
Following the loss, Lehmann put out a post on her socials which simply read: ‘Work work work.’
Switzerland’s Leila Wandeler, who plays for Lyon, addressed the loss with a little more depth:
“The result didn’t matter. For us, it was about testing our game principles.”
“The training sessions are exhausting. But we all want to be in our best shape for this European Championship. That’s why I think it’s a good thing.”
Well, I suppose that’s one way of looking at it.
In fairness to the Swiss women’s team, their captain and Arsenal midfielder Lia Walti wasn’t playing in the game, but even still, you’d probably expect them to be able to handle a group of under 15 lads, or at least not get thumped 7-1 by them.
As Wandeler says though, it’s about building fitness and ‘testing our game principles’. If there was actually something on the line during this game, surely they’d have taken the W. Right?
