You’d think that with all the Brits getting busted for international drug smuggling recently, anyone with half a braincell would be put off from attempting something similar. Well apparently not, because we seem to get a new batch of these stories coming in every week.

Louisa de Marco, 57, had been promised £10,000 if she successfully carried 30kg of cannabis from Thailand into Manchester.

Louisa must have thought she was home and dry as she collected two cases from the carousel at Manchester Airport, but was then detained by officers who discovered 31.25kg of weed in her bags.

During the police interview, De Marco confirmed she met someone on a previous trip to Thailand who offered her the chance to make some money.

That person paid her for her latest trip into Bangkok.

Ex-Asda manager De Marco initially said she had not packed the cases herself and believed they contained tobacco, but eventually pleaded guilty to the importation of a class B drug.

Naturally, her lawyer argued that De Marco had been threatened and intimidated by the drug exporters, and asked that she be spared a prison sentence as her adult daughter relied on her to pay the rent.

Judge Recorder Sarah Griffin was having none of it however, stating De Marco had travelled to Thailand with her ‘eyes wide open’.

She added: ‘You knew exactly what you were letting yourself in for.’

In the end, De Marco was sentenced to 20 months in prison, of which she is expected to serve half locked up.

Not too bad, giving the amount she was carrying. But also a bit unlucky given that, earlier this year, two best friends from Birmingham got let off with a slap on the wrist after smuggling 35kg of cannabis into the UK from New York. 4kg more than Louisa’s haul!

Not to mention the 19-year-old Londoner was also let off scot-free for her attempt at bringing £225,000 worth of weed into the UK from Canada.

Maybe age was the crucial factor? If Louisa De Marco had been a young lady in her 20s or late teens, the judge would have put it down to the naivety of youth. Apparently when you’re 57, you really should know better than to become an international drugs smuggler and risk your freedom for £10,000. You live and you learn.
