11) Tick Sucking Blood From Human Leg

Wellcome Image Awards - Tick sucking blood from human leg

Apparently the photographer used his own leg in this shot, now that’s dedication. Although I suppose it may have been difficult to find a willing model, Kate Moss is working for Burberry at the moment so I guess she’s busy.

12) Vitamin C Crystals

Wellcome Image Awards - Vitamin C crystals

To get it to crystallize like this they took vitamin C powder that had begun to oxidise and spread it onto a microscope slide. This was warmed until enough water had evaporated to leave a thin film of solution packed full of vitamin C, which was then scratched with a needle to initiate crystal growth. It looks like Egyptian hieroglyphs to me.

13) Wiring Of The Human Brain

Wellcome Image Awards - Wiring of the human brain

This image was made using diffusion-weighted imaging which is a specialised type of MRI scan. They’re measuring the movement of water and the direction of movement is colour coded. Fibres travelling up and down (between the top of the head and neck) are coloured blue, fibres travelling forwards and backwards (between the face and back of the head) are coloured green, and fibres travelling left and right (between the ears) are coloured red. I wish there was that much going on in my brain.

14) Zebra Fish Embryo

Wellcome Image Awards - Zebrafish embryo

This cool looking dude is a  four-day-old zebrafish embryo. It’s about 1cm long and looks permanently surprised. Isn’t the world we’re living in incredible?
