Everyone wants to know the secret to long life, but everyone who actually makes it to a ridiculous large age always cites something really stupid as the factor that’s enabled them to get that far.

The latest in this long line is 101 year old Mary Flip of Chandler, Arizona. The woman lived through two world wars, the Great Depression and has given birth to six children, but says that the key to her longevity is indulging in a shot of tequila every day.

Incredibly, Mary’s sister and mother died when she was just 15 and living in Illinois. At the age of 18, she then moved to Mexico to marry a rancher, before moving back to Chicago when she was pregnant with her first child and switching careers to become a successful artist that was recognised by the Chicago School of Art:

I really like to draw. And I was able to figure out that things change even as you’re drawing them.

So, I was able to develop and make them look real. It took time but I had nothing else to do except raise a bunch of kids.

Good for her I suppose. Would love to know about how much tequila she had been drinking over the course of her life to keep her going to 101, but I guess that’s just going to be one of her secrets that goes with her to the grave. Let her talk about drawing if that’s what she wants.

Mary was still quite a badass at her birthday party the other day though, joking that she would get up on the table to celebrate and smashing back a few pints of Guinness. Strangely didn’t see any tequila there, but maybe she only drinks it once a week or something. Guess we’ll never know.

For more of the same, check out this study that says eating cheese is the key to a long life. Sure.
