There’s nothing sadder than a four-year-old boy spending his birthday without friends, but that’s what happened to one young lad in Queensland after his mum bought a vegan cake for the celebrations.

Two weeks prior to the birthday celebrations, Malachi Craine handed out invitations, but received no RSVPs after children at Malachi’s school began bullying him over the vegan cake. Why did his mum even have to mention the cake was vegan?! Well, we know why – she’s vegan so she couldn’t help herself.

Speaking to 7 News, mum Angel Craine, 27, said: “They’ve all bullied him and told him they aren’t coming unless he has cow in his cake. I just can’t get over that kids his age already bully vegans. [Malachi] was pretty sad that no one wants to be his friend or come but he’s pretty resilient.”

Angel explained that she had planned to make a chocolate vegan cake for Malachi’s birthday, which is set to be a Pokémon-themed party at the end of October. Since none of the kids who were invited have RSVP’d or told Malachi they will be attending, Craine decided to post on the Vegans in Australia Facebook group to ask for help on what she should do next.

She wrote in the group: “My four-year-old son seems to get bullied a lot for being vegan. Apparently none of his friends want to come to his birthday if he has a vegan cake and are always being rude about him being vegan all the time. So I’m wondering if there are any people around northside of Brisbane with vegan children that would like to come to his fifth birthday.”

Good news on that front – so far 12 children of the group members have said they will be attending the party, with plenty more to follow now that this story is going viral I bet. Take that, non-vegan cake eaters!

Angel says: “He’s super excited to make friends with similar interests and ethics. I absolutely am in awe of how caring the vegan community is.”

Well, I’m not sure how much of a 4-year-old’s ethics when it comes to diet are their own, but I guess Malachi can work that out for himself later in life if he ever gets a craving for some Maccies or something. Happy birthday in advance, buddy!
