A massive row broke out on Twitter this week after some users objected to Sussex Police referring to a transgender paedophile as a “woman convicted of historic offences against children”, despite the fact they committed the crimes as a man.

58-year-old Sally Ann Dixon was known as John Stephen Dixon when he sexually abused seven children (five girls and two boys) between 1989 and 1996, before transitioning to female in 2004. With scores of Twitter users kicking off, the hapless intern who handles Sussex Police’s Twitter account wasn’t about to sit back and allow this sex offender to be misgendered on social media:

The (since-deleted) Tweet attracted tons of backlash, and even prompted Home Secretary Suella Braverman to get involved and ask Sussex Police to sort themselves out:

Which led to this swift apology by Sussex Police:

Fair play to Sussex Police for quickly realising what a bad look their original response and publicly correcting the record – that the crimes themselves were committed by a male. Pretending otherwise just does a terrible disservice to crime statistics, especially when it comes to sexual assault crimes against women and children.

In fairness to Sussex Police the person who Tweeted that was probably some woke 20-year-old straight out of uni, and not even a police officer at all. No comment thus far on the fact Sally Anne will serve 20 years in a women’s prison, which I guess is another matter altogether and one that people way more qualified and educated on the matter than me will have to discuss. At the end of the day, it’s another dangerous sex offender off the streets. Let’s hope they keep up the good work on that front.
