Back in July, Ricky Martin was looking at 50 years in prison after his 21-year-old nephew accused him of domestic violence and incest, claiming the two of them carried on a sexual relationship after which he had to take out a restraining order on his uncle.

Dennis Yadiel Sanchez claimed he ended a 7-month relationship with his uncle Ricky, who took it badly and began harassing him and turning up at his home. Under Puerto Rican law, there very harsh penalties for sexual crimes when the alleged victim is related to the accused, so it wasn’t looking good for the Livin’ La Vida Loca legend.

At the time, Ricky put out this message denying the accusation:

Well since then, Sanchez has withdrawn the allegations, with Ricky claiming his nephew sent threatening messages demanding money or he would ‘continue with his campaign to assassinate his reputation and integrity, through false and malicious imputations,’ as per TMZ.

Ricky offered a further update more recently:

So Ricky Martin is now seeking $20 million in damages, with the accusations causing him to ‘have multimillion dollar-contracts and present and future artistic projects cancelled’. That’s the thing about false accusations like this – they stay with you forever even if you’re found innocent or the accuser admits they made the whole thing up. When people think ‘Ricky Martin’ they’ll at least have a fleeting thought of the time his nephew accused him of domestic violence and incest, and that’s something major brands want nothing to do with, even if the accusations have been shown to be false.

So yeah, this could turn out to be a total career-ender for Ricky Martin. Although to be fair we hadn’t heard his name for a few years anyway. Even still – totally unfair. Let’s hope he manages to achieve some semblance of justice at the end of it all.
