Rachel Riley Apologises After Channel 4 Urged To Sack Her Over ‘Islamophobic’ Tweets

Like many people, Rachel Riley jumped to the conclusion that the Sydney knife attack at the weekend was the work of an Islamist terrorist, who was acting as part of a Palestinian uprising against the Jews.

Given that the first images of the knifeman appeared to show a man with tanned skin, and given that the attack took place in a predominantly Jewish area, Rachel Riley figured it was safe to fire off this (since-deleted) Tweet:

Welp, just one problem – it turns out the Sydney knifeman who stabbed 6 people to death was a white guy named Joel, and was suffering from long-term mental health issues. Of course he had tanned skin – he’s an Aussie! Nothing to do with Israel, Palestine or an intifada whatsoever, as far as anyone can tell.

And so, Rachel Riley was left with no choice but to admit she jumped the gun, and has since deleted the Tweet and apologised with the following statement:

Well, I guess you can call that an apology. She followed up with a further apology later after people kept giving her grief and calling for Channel 4 to sack her:

Just goes to show, if you’re going to use a mass killing to make a political point, you better be absolutely sure of the facts otherwise you’re going to be called a bigot, a racist, and all the rest of it. Which won’t be anything Rachel Riley hasn’t experienced before, especially after that time she mocked an Arsenal fan from India, and the long-standing beef she’s had with Jeremy Corbyn over the years.

Still, do we really want to see her sacked from Channel 4? She does a good job on Countdown/8 of out 10 cats and is a staple of the programming at this point. I guess she’ll have a job waiting for her at GB News if she does get the sack, but even still. Think of how upset Jimmy Carr would be…

What were we talking about again?
