The Wire is well recognised as one of the greatest TV shows of all time, and whilst its creator David Simon has made Treme, Show Me A Hero and Generation Kill since its climax, it’s probably fair to say that none of them are really seen in the same light as his magnum opus.

This might be about to change with his next venture though. Entitled The Deuce, the series follows twin brothers Vincent and Frankie Martino – both played by James Franco – who become involved with the mob during the rise of the porn industry in 1970s New York. Maggie Gyllenhaal also plays a sex worker so its safe to say that the acting credentials are all there.

Simon had the following to say about it:

It’s roughly based on the story of the actual people who were there, some of the people that were the pioneers when pornography came out of the brown paper bag and became an open industry.

Suddenly, a lucrative and provocative industry came out of nowhere soon to become a billion-dollar industry and a culture [impacting] right down to commercials to sell beer that became more and more overt right down to the sex education of a twelve-year-old with a laptop.

Sounds good right? The first trailer just dropped and whilst it doesn’t exactly give much away except there’s going to be some skimpily dressed women, a lot of drinking, a lot of cops, a lot of violence and a lot of moustaches, it’s certainly got us excited for the 10th September:

Looks pretty good right? I know I already mentioned it but I’m loving those moustaches. It also looks like Simon is going back to the kind of material he knows how to make work on the small screen, where some of his recent output may be considered slightly ‘experimental’ for him. Excited for it, that’s for sure.
