When it comes to ridiculous traditions this country has, I don’t think that you can get much better than The Gloucestershire Cheese Rolling Race or The Atherstone Ball Game, both absolutely ridiculous ancient traditions that have no real business still existing today but still manage to attract swathes of people to compete and spectate every year.

The Gloucestershire Cheese Rolling Race hasn’t happened for the past couple of years because of COVID and the highlights below show that nothing has really changed in terms of its entertainment value in a post-pandemic world. In case you’ve never heard of it (moron), then the rules are simple: a bunch of people run down a hill as fast as they can in pursuit of a roll of cheese and whoever gets to the bottom first gets to take it home as the prize.

Unfortunately the hill is very steep and has loads of bobbles in it so pretty much everyone falls over multiple times and gets the absolute living shit beat out of them on their way. It’s great and it’s even better when the Ozzy Man reviews them and gives people names like ‘Captain England’.

Check it out:

Love that shit. Just can’t get enough of the guys who roll over and bounce up and then start running down the hill again. They must have been training all year to get so good at it, especially that Captain England guy – he looks like he was a seasoned veteran of the event. Can’t wait for next year.

For more of the same, check out these other five bizarre rural customs that somehow still exist in this country. Crazy.
