Delroy Lindo Makes First Public Comments On BAFTA N-Word Controversy At The NAACP Awards
A week on from the Tourette’s N-word controversy at the BAFTAs, Delroy Lindo has addressed the incident while on stage at the the 57th NAACP (The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) Image Awards.
Lindo, 73, was on stage with Michael B. Jordan when Tourette’s sufferer John Davidson yelled the slur at the BAFTAs last week. Here’s what he had to say about it last night:

“We appreciate all of the support and love we have been shown in the aftermath of what happened last weekend … it is an honour to be here amongst our people, amongst so many people who have shown us support. It’s a classic example of something that could have been very negative becoming very positive.”
Unfortunately, “the aftermath of what happened last week” also involves a man with a neurological condition being vilified for unintentionally yelling out a racist slur with a live microphone that the BBC set up in close proximity to him (aside from also failing to edit the slur out of the broadcast on a 2-hour delay).

So while it’s great that Lindo and Jordan are feeling supported and loved, it would be nice if John Davidson was shown the same compassion, and that maybe they could acknowledge that they understand the incident was a result of a terrible neurological disorder.
I mean, I don’t want to tell them how they should feel about it, seeing as they were the ones up on stage in that moment, but I do feel bad for John Davidson having to put up with all this, especially with a movie out that was created precisely to get people to understand Tourette’s better.
Maybe Davidson could meet Lindo and Jordan face-to-face and have a proper discussion about it, televised or otherwise? On second thoughts, maybe that’s not such a good idea…
