Canadian Police Announce They Are Respecting School Shooter’s Preferred Pronouns
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police are catching some flak after announcing that they are respecting the preferred pronouns of the shooter who killed eight people and wounded at least 25 more at a school in Canada this week.
Jesse Van Rootselaar AKA Jesse Strang, 18, opened fire at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School on Tuesday afternoon in a massacre that became the second deadliest school shooting in Canada’s history.

Dwayne McDonald, Deputy Commissioner of British Columbia RCMP, was asked why the police were ‘hiding’ the fact that Jesse was transgender.
The Deputy Commissioner denied they were hiding it, noted that this was the first time they were asked about it, and then explained: ‘We identified the suspect as they chose to be identified in public and social media.’

Authorities have also been referring to Van Rootselaar in interviews as a ‘gunperson’, which is about as Canadian as it gets really. Jordan Peterson would be rolling in his grave!
Comments on X include:

Van Rootselaar first fatally shot his 39-year-old mum and 11-year-old stepbrother at home before attacking the high school, killing 6 people, and then taking own life.
Those who knew Van Rootselaar said the gunman was a ‘quiet kid’ who was often seen ‘sitting by himself in the corner’.

I don’t think it’s inaccurate to suggest that Canadian authorities and certain media outlets are attempting to hide, or at least downplay, the fact that the shooter was trans. I get it – they don’t want to be accused of stirring up ill-feeling against the transgender community.
At the same time , they are choosing to respect the shooter’s preferred pronouns, and that’s also winding people up. What can you do though? It’s Canada, they’re polite. Misgendering a school shooter is a crime on par with a school shooting itself. Well, probably not, but that’s how some interpret it from the way the RCMP are going on.
At the end of the day, what’s important is that we understand why and how this happened and attempt to make the changes needed in society to ensure it doesn’t happen again.
