Fantasy Premier League may not be the same as gambling, but it still feels a bit dodgy that a player would captain the opposition’s striker before a big game, which is what happened ahead of the Man City/Burnley game last Friday.

According to FPL Focal, Burnley players Josh Brownill, Jack Cork and Arijanet Muric, ALL captained Haaland against their own team, which seems like it might be just a little bit of a conflict of interest.

After all, their teammates had a little more faith in themselves. Dara O’Shea stuck Haaland last on his bench, and goalkeeper James Trafford outright refused to own him (while also backing himself in goal). Proper Burnley!

In fairness, none of the three players who captained Haaland were on the pitch when the Norwegian scored, but still, not exactly the mentality that coach Vincent Kompany will have wanted from his players going into the game. Sounds like the sort of mentality that gets you relegated at the end of the season, to be fair?

I mean, what was going through their heads at the moment Haaland scored his first goal? “F*ck! Oh well, at least I get double points on FPL.” Wouldn’t be surprised if Kompany fines them for this, to be honest.

On the other hand, I guess they were just being realistic. There’s a reason 73% of FPL players captained Haaland and that’s because he was all but guaranteed to pick up points in his game. No use falling behind in your mini-league just because you’re a Burnley player tasked with stopping the most ferocious striker the Premier League has seen in years. Good luck them on the rest of the season.
