Doncaster singer/songwriter Yungblud has received the ultimate endorsement: being compared to Freddie Mercury by legendary Queen guitarist Brian May.

Here’s Yungblud’s rendition of ‘We Are The Champions’ that impressed May so much:

May shared the clip of Yungblud’s performance alongside the following caption:

“Every now and then, while idly scrolling in the park, you come upon something that makes you go ‘wow’. And you just have to press that ‘follow’ button. Very classy.

I remember so clearly the same kind of derision being poured on Freddie when we started out as Queen. As soon as I see someone who can inspire such strong reactions, positive and negative, I’m sure this person is a star performer.”

So it’s not like Brian May bigged him up out of the blue, but rather after hearing him cover a legendary Queen track. Still, it’s high praise indeed and will be reassuring to the Donny lad after the rest of the internet pretty much shxt on the cover. Which is to be expected anytime someone makes a cover that varies from the original in any way, especially when we’re talking a Queen classic.

Here’s an example of one of Yungblud’s original tracks – not for me, but the guy has over a billion streams on Spotify so he’s clearly doing something right:
