But what was Alexis motivation for the rampage? Investigators are still unsure but a number of people have uncovered details about his life that may reveal some ideas behind his mentality. One incident in 2011 which actually led to him being discharged from the Navy in 2011 seems particularly relevant in this discussion.

According to an upstairs neighbour from his time when he lived in a gated community in Forth Worth, Texas, he fired a gun through the floor of their apartment without motivation. Alexis alleges that it just went off by accident when he was cleaning it as he had been cooking before this and his hands were slippery though. This already sounds like a really dodgy excuse but there is more evidence from the time that would suggest that Alexis had fired the weapon off deliberately.

The upstairs neighbour – a woman – stated that Alexis had called the police on her several times during his tenure at the apartment for being too loud, and that he had also verbally confronted her in the parking lot about this too. The woman was said to be ‘terrified’ of Alexis due to this dispute and these altercations.

To create even more suspicion for his motivations, directly following the incident Alexis also refused to come to his door when a policeman tried to question him and only did so when the fire department were called and tried forcibly enter his apartment. Obviously this all looks fairly suspicious and points to Alexis firing a shot through the floor on purpose because he was so angry with his neighbour, and this probably led to his discharge from the Navy.

Aside from this, there is also another previous incident where he has been involved with brandishing firearms, this time back in 2004. It happened in Seattle – although he was still based in Fort Worth at the time – and is said to have been involved in an incident described as an ‘anger fuelled shooting’ in which he damaged the car of a construction worker.

During this investigation, it was discovered that Alexis suffered from anger management issues related to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder which allegedly stemmed from the fact he was involved in rescue attempts during the 9/11 attacks. Apparently the construction workers had mocked him earlier that day and he then suffered an ‘anger fuelled blackout’ and could not remember firing his gun or anything that had happened.

Alexis was not charged formally for either of these crimes although the 2010 incident did contribute to his discharge from the Navy in 2011.
