A woman over in Australia has resorted to desperate measures in order to quit smoking.

Instead of going down the patches or gum route, she’s quite literally chained herself up in her room. For the past couple of weeks, 34-year-old Krystel Spicer has remained chained to her bed, with her bedroom filled with an array of tinned food to keep her going for her three week quitting period. She also has a microwave in the corner of her room so that she can have hot food and games to keep herself entertained. Here’s Krystel explaining why she’s turned to such drastic lengths to quit the cigs:

Canned food

I am a 20-year smoker. I am one of those people who won’t quit to save their life.

I had a pap smear done and they found abnormal cells, so after the results came in I just looked at my daughter and I said ‘well I’m just about to treat everyone really badly because I’m going on a chain.’

I’ve tried to quit once, I quit once, for four days and was told I was treating people badly here and they wished I start smoking again. And I wonder how many people are asked that by their loved ones?

When asked what her mum thought of the drastic measure, she replied:

She thinks I’m insane.

You know what, I’ll take life over mad any day.

Basically you can call me mad all you like, I want to live!

Fair play to her – I think she raises a pretty strong argument there. I mean, women have abnormal cells from pap smears all the time, but at least it was a wake up call for Krystel. Yes, chaining yourself to the bed is a little extreme, but I guess if you’re a fiend for the cigs, nicotine patches just aren’t going to cut it.

She’s certainly doing a far better job than this husband who got busted smoking behind his wife’s back by Google Street View.
