We revealed a couple of weeks ago that because Will Smith opted not to come back for the Independence Day sequel next year, that his character was going to be written out. The story went that he was killed whilst testing out an alien spaceship that malfunctioned.

A sad day for fans of the original movie, but also apparently a really sad day for Will Smith too. Speaking with Yahoo Movies to promote Concussion, he had the following to say about it:

I was working on Suicide Squad during that time. Roland [Emmerich] and I had talked about it. The trailer looks really cool. I’m going to be sitting around with tears in my eyes when that one comes out … It was terrible when I found out my character died.

Well I mean what did Will Smith think was going to happen? That they were just not going to mention the whereabouts of one of the main characters from the previous movies so he could turn up if they ever made a third one? Come on man, there’s no way that was going to happen, was there?

It’s still kind of weird that Smith is so emotionally invested in this one character though. I mean sure Steven Hiller is a really cool guy but he’s no cooler than half the other people that Will Smith has played in his career.

Do other actors get upset when their characters die in movies? Spare a thought for Sean Bean there Will – he’s died in every movie he’s pretty much ever been in.
