WikiLeaks has suffered an embarrassing cyber-attack from hacking group OurMine.

The takeover saw visitors to the non-profit whistleblower site being redirected to the following page:

OurMine has a reputation of hacking high profile social media accounts including that of Netflix, HBO, Sony, Marvel, Google and public figures including Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Google CEO Sunder Pichai. They claim the attack was a response to a challenge from the organisation to hack them… but is there more to this story than meets the eye?

Conspiracy theorists certainly think so and they reckon it has something to do with Hillary Clinton and pharma bro Martin Shkreli. Just yesterday Shkreli published two controversial Facebook posts, the first claiming he had a sample of Hillary Clinton’s DNA and the second claiming he had a chip containing 10 million deleted Hillary Clinton emails:

He then posted this cryptic message suggesting his life might be in danger:

The comments appear to be in reference to the reported emails that Clinton had wiped from a private server during her time as secretary of state. But what does this have to do with the recent WikiLeaks takeover? Well, some theorists reckon that Shkreli was about to hand over the emails to the whistleblower site for them to leak online.

This Reddit thread points out, “Shkreli posted his deadman switch and images of Clinton DNA and data chip containing the deleted emails, now Wikileaks.org is down.” Now here’s the clincher – there has been speculation for some time as to whether Hillary Clinton and her team are linked to OurMine – the company behind the WikiLeaks shut down. A similar incident went down last year when OurMine launched an attack against WikiLeaks, preventing internet surfers from reaching the site to view and download its content. This occurred just after WikiLeaks published over 1200 of Hillary Clinton’s emails relating to the Iraq war.

So did OurMine shut down WikiLeaks as part of a “challenge” or was it really to prevent Hillary’s emails from getting leaked in the same way they did last year? Hopefully we’ll find out more in the upcoming days by keeping an eye on Shkreli’s actions.

Of course, there is also a good chance that Shkreli is just trolling us with a fake chip and DNA sample. He is king of the trolls after all.
