Everyone knows that being obese is going to lead to a shit tonne of health problems for you, but I’m not sure if I’ve ever fully realised the effect it can have on your body – this autopsy changed that.

The autopsy was conducted over in Long Beach, California, where the 5’5″ woman who weighed 17 stone in her 60s had donated her body for medical research. She died from heart failure after being categorised as morbidly obese and the doctors decided to share the pictures of her autopsy to illustrate the dangers of letting yourself get so out of shape.

Carla Valentine, technical curator of the museum of pathology at Queen Mary University, explained what she saw and if you want to scroll down then you can see some pictures from the autopsy as well (but be warned, they’re pretty damn graphic):

Her flesh was difficult to cut due to thick yellow fat.

I needed a lot more strength to cut through the tissue which kind of bloomed out in neon yellow.

It made me aware of the fat on my own body and the effect it has.

The amount of fat you can see tells you how likely the fat is to be doing damage elsewhere.

Her heart weighed 449 grams, which is twice the size of what would be considered healthy for somebody of her petite height.

Her kidneys were also enlarged and her liver was meaty instead of soft due to the influence of the fat on her body.

So there you have it. If those pictures and that analysis isn’t enough for you to get off your lazy ass and try and get into shape then you probably need to have a word with yourself. Or check out the pros and cons of being a fatty here and really get to know what the best thing for you would be.
