A Sons Of Anarchy Spinoff Is Actually Happening

Ever since Sons Of Anarchy departed from our screens a couple of years ago, people have been talking about a spinoff series. Even series creator Kurt Sutter went public with the news saying that he was contemplating that it might involve a post Vietnam era look at the nine original members of SAMCRO.

That sounded pretty interesting, but that idea has been put on the back burner for now with the news that an actual spinoff has been confirmed. It’s instead going to focus on the Mayans – SAMCRO’s motorcycle gang rivals – and be called Mayans MC.

Sutter states that ‘it will be interesting to see the influences of [the Spanish-sneaking] culture and how it impacts the subculture we already understand’ and has enlisted the help of Elgin James to write the pilot. James is a Latino filmmaker and the founder of a street gang called Friends Stand United – they literally go around beating up drug dealers and racists to stand up for their friends.

Sutter had this to say about James (pictured below):

Elgin James

I wanted to find a strong, unique Latino voice. Because I didn’t think a white guy from Jersey should be writing about Latin culture and traditions. Elgin is that voice.

Mayans MC will be a dark, visceral family drama that takes a new look at the most American of icons, the 1% outlaw, this time reflected through a Latino lens.

Sounds good. I probably would have preferred to see the post-Vietnam prequel to be honest, but this one still sounds like it will be great and with Sutter at the helm it’s bound to be good. Not sure about Elgin James as I don’t really know anything about him, but at least it sounds like he’s gonna know what he’s talking about.

Did you know Ron Perlman wasn’t the first choice to play Clay Morrow? Find out who was here.
