People still claim to be possessed by the devil every now and again these days, but it’s definitely something that seems more rooted in the past.

That’s where the story of Sister Maria Crocifissa della Concezione begins. Concezione was a nun in Sicily who believed that she was possessed by the devil and that he had taken over her hands to write a letter in 1676. It was found in a convent when she woke up one day and she claimed to have no recollection of writing it.

The letter was written in some kind of weird code as you can see above and it was unable to be translated until now. The Ludum Science Centre in Catania believe they finally have though after running it through some software on the dark web that is used by intelligence services to break codes. It used Latin, Ancient Greek, the runic alphabet and Arabic to crack it.

Whilst the full text of the letter hasn’t yet been released, some of the key phrases that have been translated from it appear below:

Convent Sicily

Humans are responsible for the creation of God.

This system works for no one.

God thinks he can free mortals.

Perhaps now, Styx is certain.

God and Jesus are dead weights.

Well, there isn’t really anything that controversial there but I suppose in the 17th century some of those comments would have been enough to see you executed. I guess that’s why she ended up writing it in code.

Despite the fact that the text isn’t really that useful to anyone, Daniele Abate from the Ludum Science Centre in Catania are still pretty stoked that they’ve managed to translate it finally, saying the following:

I personally believe that the nun had a good command of languages, which allowed her to invent the code, and may have suffered from a condition like schizophrenia, which made her imagine dialogues with the Devil.

The whole world is talking about our work and several Satanists have contacted us since we revealed our findings.

Apparently they’re now working on translating the full letter so we’ll let you know when that comes in. Let’s hope it doesn’t unleash an ancient curse on the world or anything as a result of it. We’ve all seen how it goes in the movies.
