‘The Karate Kid’ was one of the best 80s movies out there and it already had a whole bunch sequels and a reboot, so it’s kind of surprising that the original cast have decided to get back together to continue the story 33 years after it was originally released.

But that is exactly what’s happened with the announcement of ‘Cobra Kai’, a new ten episode series that will premiere on YouTube Red. Here’s what Josh Heald (one of the scriptwriters) had to say about it:

Karate Kid

It’s going to revolve around a down-and-out Johnny who, seeking redemption, reopens the infamous Cobra Kai dojo. It reignites his rivalry with a now-successful Daniel, who has been struggling to maintain balance in his life without the guidance of his mentor, Mr. Miyagi (the late Pat Morita).

The series is a true continuation of the original films — packed with comedy, heart and thrilling fight scenes. We can’t wait to reignite the LaRusso-Lawrence rivalry, and we’re thankful to our partners at YouTube Red, Sony Pictures Television and Overbrook for their shared enthusiasm in making our dream project a reality.

Sounds promising doesn’t it? It was even the subject of a massive bidding war between Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, AMC and YouTube Red before YouTube Red finally won the rights to screen it, so it seems like a lot of people had a lot of confidence in the show. Hopefully it lives up to the hype.
