As time goes on it’s become apparent that Orlando shooter Omar Mateen’s motives had much to do with his own self-loathing and confusion living as both a closeted gay man and a homophobe.

We already heard how Omar was a regular at Pulse and even used a popular gay dating app for no-strings hook-ups.

Well a man claiming to be Omar’s ex-lover has now come forward to shed some more light on the killer’s motives. The man remains unidentified wearing a mask during the interview and referring to himself only as ‘Miguel’. Miguel believes that Omar held a grudge on the night of the massacre because he “felt used” by Latino men and a lover had turned up HIV positive:

He adored Latinos, gay Latinos, with brown skin — but he felt rejected … The truth is that he didn’t do it for terrorism. In my opinion he did it for revenge … He was terrified that he was infected. I asked him, ‘Did you do a test?’ Yes. He went to the pharmacy and did the test … it came out negative but it doesn’t come out right away. It takes four, five months.

Asked why he decided to come forward with his story, he said:

It’s my responsibility as a citizen of the United States and a gay man.

Of course there’s no way of telling how much truth there is to Miguel’s claims but he has spoken to the FBI three times following the massacre about his relationship with Omar, who he says was a “friend with benefits.”

Regarding Omar’s professed ISIS allegiance (he pledged himself to them as he carried out the attacks), Miguel says he was “a confused, gay man who drank heavily.”

With all that in mind, the video below features an interesting discussion on why Omar may have suppressed his homosexuality:
