As you will have seen in the news, Brussels is on total lockdown following a series of explosions at Zaventem airport and Maelbeek metro station.

So far there have been reports that up to 28 people were killed and dozens injured during the attack, which started at around 7am UK time today. Belgium’s federal prosecutor has confirmed that one of the explosions was carried out by a suicide bomber, although so far no one has verified that this was a terrorist attack.

Brussels attacks

This is an absolutely tragic state of affairs and obviously requires the highest sensitivity and empathy towards those who are suffering and grieving. Unless you are Nigel Farage of course, as he decided to use the incident as a way to pitch his stance on the European Union.

The Ukip leader has been called “shameless Brexit scum” and branded as “disgusting” for using the attacks for his own agenda. He retweeted a pro-Brexit message from Allison Pearson, Telegraph columnist, while the tragedy was still unfolding:

Social media users have come back with a barrage of abuse for his insensitivity and “cheap political point scoring”:

The whole thing is very disrespectful and probably will add to the many reasons that some people in this world actually want to see Farage assassinated.
