People got pretty excited yesterday when we bought them the news that Danny McBride was starring in a reboot of Crocodile Dundee as Mick Dundee’s son, but it turns out that this excitement might be short-lived as this might not even be a real project.

A second trailer for Dundee: The Son Of A Legend Returns Home features Chris Hemsworth and can be seen below and this has caused some people to doubt that this is actually a full on movie. Take a look at it below alongside the official synopsis and then we’ll tell you why:

Crocodile Dundee is back! Well, actually, he’s missing in the Outback. And the only person who might be able to find him is the loudmouthed American son no one knew he had.

Introducing Danny McBride as Brian Dundee. This son of a legend is forced to channel his Aussie roots as he embarks on the ultimate adventure in the land down under.

It’s time to live up to the family name. Unlike his father, Brian grew up a true city kid. But that won’t stop him from picking up his dad’s oversized knife and launching into the Australian outback, completely unprepared for what lies ahead.

I mean that sounds like a solid idea for a movie doesn’t it? Unfortunately, there are a number of reasons people don’t think it’s real:

  1. Many film journalists have noted that they haven’t been contacted by Hollywood PR firms to promote the movie, that would almost certainly always be the case with a movie of this scale.
  2. Australia’s federal government film agency, Screen Australia, does not list ‘Dundee’ as in pre-production, production or post-production in the country.
  3. Chris Hemsworth is a Tourism Australia ambassador.
  4. The Superbowl is coming up next week and as we all know, brands like to go big and out of the box for their Superbowl commercials.

Bearing all that in mind, many people are thinking that these are just trailers for a Superbowl advert for something like Foster’s beer or touring Australia. To say we’re disappointed is probably an understatement if that is the case, but given the fantastic reception the trailer have enjoyed, maybe this will encourage Danny McBride to actually get out and make it. We can but hope.

For more of the same, check out the original trailer that got everyone so excited here. It’ll get you.
