Michael Phelps is the most decorated athlete in Olympic history, the best swimmer of all time and practically a goddamn superhuman – did you know his arm span (6’8″) is bigger than his height? Or that his lungs are double the size of a normal person’s and his ankles bend in such unnatural ways that they’ve been described as ‘flippers’?

Guy was born to swim and he’s been doing so for his whole career basically, completely decimating anything that gets in his way. That’s why for his next challenge after retirement, he’s turning to the ocean and trying to out swim a great white shark as part of the Discovery Channel’s annual event Shark Week.

Here’s the press release for the event, which will take place live on July 23rd:

They are one of the fastest and most efficient predators on the planet: Sharks. He is our greatest champion to ever get in the water: Michael Phelps. 39 world records. 23 Olympic golds. But he has one competition left to win.

An event so monumental no one has ever attempted it before. The world’s most decorated athlete takes on the ocean’s most efficient predator: Phelps V Shark – the race is on!

I mean I’m not really sure how they’re going to get a shark to swim in a lane against Michael Phelps in a safe environment, but I’m interested to see which one of them is faster and for the whole spectacle of it, even if it does sound monumentally stupid. It’s kinda like Conor McGregor Vs. Floyd Mayweather in that respect.
