8) Make Voting Compulsory

Election-Day-Australia

In Australia it is a legal requirement that everyone votes. If you don’t vote you get stung with a (pretty measly) $20 fine. This means that 95% of the population rock up on voting day, compared to the UK’s pathetic 60%. It’s not only Australia that makes non-voters criminals, as of August 2013, 22 countries were recorded as having laws for compulsory voting and 11 of those enforce that law in practice.

If I were to reach for my Grinch hat again I might be tempted to say that if you’re stupid enough not to vote then you shouldn’t have your voice heard any way. But, as I said earlier, I’m not putting that hat on today.
