Turns out Game of Thrones may be steering away from depictions of sexual violence that have made it so infamous, following a whole bunch of complaints they picked up last season.

One of the scenes that got people bitching and moaning was the one where (SPOILER ALERT) Ramsay Bolton raped Sansa Stark — which was actually visually tame compared to other scenes earlier in the series.

According to Jeremy Podeswa, who has directed 2 episodes of the show and is set to direct more in Season 6, the complaints to HBO over rape scenes has led creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss to reconsider how the show will approach the subject.

He says:

(The creators) were responsive to the discussion and there were a couple of things that changed as a result. It is important that (the producers) not self-censor. The show depicts a brutal world where horrible things happen. They did not want to be too overly influenced by that (criticism) but they did absorb and take it in and it did influence them in a way.

So I know he says they’re keen not to self-censor too much, but still, I don’t like the sound of this. How anyone can watch Game of Thrones all the way into season 5 only to start bitching about a relatively tame rape scene after everything that happened previously is insanity. The last thing you want to hear is that the writers are now taking advice from people who freak out over the show’s brutality. It’s Game of Thrones FFS. It’s supposed to be the most brutal show on television.

Is the Bolton/Sansa saga so fucked up and terrible that it makes you want to murder Bolton yourself? Yeah, that’s the point. That scene worked to perfection. We don’t need the writers writing the new season with a little voice in their heads asking them to tone shit down because a few people might get upset. People want to feel uncomfortable watching Game of Thrones, they want to feel enraged with the arsehole characters. That’s what makes GOT the best show in TV history.

Anyways, hopefully it won’t be so bad. Here’s our rundown of the best / worst Game of Thrones tattoos to get you in the mood for next season.
