Germany’s chancellor Angela Merkel was given the shock of her life during a recent trip to the US after being handed an invoice for £300billion in unpaid Nato contributions.

Trump allegedly had a made-up invoice printed out, which included the sum estimated by his aides to cover the country’s unpaid contributions for defence. Quite rightly, Merkel will apparently ignore Trump’s ridiculous attempts to get £300billion from Germany.

Well that was awkward.

The sum came after an aide totalled how much Germany had fallen below the agreed 2% GDP it was supposed to pay each year since 2002. Trump (predictably) added interest and the total came to £300billion. Both Germany and Nato officials have faced the move with criticism.

Here’s what a German government minister said to The Times:

The concept behind putting out such demands is to intimidate the other side, but the Chancellor took it calmly and will not respond to such provocations.

Sounds like she’s acting in the only way you should when confronted by a child having a tantrum – just ignore it and eventually they’ll calm down and go back to playing with their toys.

Sorry, I meant Melania, not toys.
