Back in 2011, photographer Anton Kusters released a coffee table book of photographs that he had taken over the previous two years, in which he was allowed unprecedented access to the Japanese Yakuza.

We actually covered this book when it was first released – you can see a bunch of photographs from it here – but The Economist have decided to produce this short documentary profiling Anton and his experiences with the Yakuza during his two years on the inside. Needless to say it’s a fascinating look at one of the world’s most shadowy and mysterious organisations and adds a whole new dimension to his photography.

Intense right? And probably not what you were expecting either eh?

If you enjoyed that, then check out this photo set from the most violent city in America afterwards.
