Unless live under a rock you’re probably aware that a lot of shit is going down in Middle Eastern countries like Egypt and Libya as US embassies are being attacked due to universal Islamic outrage at some movie that is circulating various media outlets that is said to be Anti-Islam and rips the piss out of the Muslim prophet Muhammad. Obviously this isn’t the kind of shit that we cover on Sick Chirpse usually, but in case you haven’t heard about it this is really serious: the US ambassador in Libya was killed because of it during a riot, the US embassy in Yemen has just been stormed and there have been massive riots in Cairo about it too.
So I guess you’re thinking, this must be one fucked up movie to inspire this amount of violence. I can’t think of one movie I’ve ever seen that has offended me so much that it made me want to kill someone who wasn’t even involved in its production but was just from the same country as them. Not even Tron:Legacy, which at the time I said was the worst movie that I had ever seen. But then I’m not religous and these guys take their religion pretty seriously. Still, I guess I’m vaguely Christian and I remember watching The Passion of The Christ and even though I thought it was shit I didn’t go out and destroy the city, I think I just went to the Birmingham Ballroom (or Academy, whatever) and got wasted and cracked on to some babes.
But yeah without being racist or whatever surely this is a bit of an overreaction? The movie is called ‘The Innocence of the Muslims ‘ and apparently it is not ‘designed to attack Muslims but to show the destructive ideology of Islam. The movie further reveals in a satirical fashion the life of Muhammad.’ Granted, it probably isn’t the best movie for radical Muslims to be watching but upon ACTUALLY watching it – it runs like a really bad Brazilian soap opera crossed with a really terrible episode of 24 or something in terms of acting, script and produciton values – I don’t think it’s really that necessary for anyone to get bat shit crazy over it, right?
I mean Muslims are portrayed as ammoral and violent, but in a completely OTT way that practically makes it a caricature, like a bad Saturday Night Live sketch or something? I don’t think anyone would watch it and start hating Muslims because of it, although we are talking about Americans. But then the majoirty of them already hate Muslims, so I doubt this movie would even do anything.
We managed to track down the extended trailer to it – I dunno if the full version is available anywhere – and like seriously it isn’t really THAT offensive. OK, maybe the rest of the movie is but this is just so stupid and so stupidly low budget and terrible that I think that anyone who is upset or offended about it is probably just looking for a dumbass reason to start a riot because it isn’t presented as anything serious, its just laughably bad and stupid.
I mean sure it is anti-Islam and kinda racist but not in a serious way, more in like a sketch show/cassetteboy kind of way – it has terrible production values, no noticeable plot and really bad overdubbing. Some are even specualting that the movie itself isn’t even real but has just been overdubbed with vaguely offensive (or extremely offensive, depending on who you are) language and could be about something completely different, although with all those costumes it was probably at least something to do with some kind of old religion.
There’s also some really, really bad CGI backgrounds and some really terrible acting and the whole thing doesn’t really make sense, although I guess it is a trailer. My favourite part is when some guy writes on a board ‘Man + X = BT,’ obviously explaining something to the girl in the scene but he says ‘man + X = Islamic Terrorist’ and the girl replies ‘yes, but what the hell is X? But yeah, the fact is it’s pretty unbeleivable that someone would even accuse something as stupid as this of racism and mindblowing that they would kill someone over it. It’s just stupid and a massive overreaction. Chill out over there guys.
